Stiggy’s 2010 Review

What a first year we had here st Stiggy’s Dogs. We met so many good people (and dogs) and have built some great relationships. Thank you, all of you, for coming into my life. Things happen for a reason…here are some great examples:

Donna Fournier: Director of Training.  Donna learned about our organization through my son, Spencer. She emailed me on a night that I couldn’t sleep. I had tossed and turned about our training program. I was in the middle of training Big Stig, and I knew I needed help. In walked Donna! Her insight and direction is the foundation of our program. Don’t know what I would have done with out you Donna….

Socializing Stella

Stella, who is so sweet and smart, is equally under socialized! I believe Stella spent a good portion of her life as a outside dog. We have witnessed many firsts with her. She is very curious in new situations, but she will work through it with you. We are slowly building her trust…

Here is her first outing to Walmart! We spent most of the day in the parking lot, sitting in the car, walking around, and we even walked her through the door and back. I am so proud of her…

At the end of the video, Jennifer is rewarding Stella with a treat. Stella isn’t allowed to take the treat until she asks (looks at Jennifer, and waits for her to say it is Ok, “take it” command). You can see Stella wanted the treat but there was so much going on around her. It took a little bit, but it’s so sweet how Stella (finally) looks at Jenn as she lets Stella ‘take it!’

What a good girl….

Run Bella Run!

We are working it here at Stiggy’s Dogs. It’s that time of year for exercise! During the cold bitter days, here is one  alternatives for our dogs. We like to train them on a treadmill, since most of our Veterans are (were) runners. This helps the dog run with their new owner, or gives the owner another way to exercise their dog. “A tired dog is a good dog”!  Bella now knows how to run on a treadmill AND run next to a bike!!! She is such a goooooood girl!! Just look at her…..  :)

These treadmills that the dogs are trained on go with the dogs to their new home. The Veterans gets his new Therapy Dog and a treadmill (for them both!) How rewarding and motivating! So if you know of anyone who has a treadmill in their basement gathering dust, put it to good use! Donations of treadmills greatly appreciated!

Stella on a treadmill!

We are amazed and excited to report that Stella is doing just stellar in her training process. The training process is a 24 hour a day, 7 days a week responsibility. Foster mom Jennifer has approached this with such passion, that she is the motivator for Stella’s fast learning. (Donna and I said yesterday that we wish we could clone her!)

Jennifer asked me if she could start treadmill training, it seemed Stella was very interested and comfortable with it. The next she called to say Stella walked for 5 minutes.  On the first try!  This video was sent the next day.

Stella meets her Foster Family.

I Tried for two days to make the hour drive to take Stella to her foster moms home. The bad weather wasn’t stopping me today! I knew Jennifer was excited to meet Stella and I really needed to get my home back in some order….

I was so thankful that Jennifer offered to take Stella in, but it wasn’t a done deal yet.  Jennifer lives with three dogs and two cats. We needed to make sure that this was a good fit for Jennifer’s pack and for Stella too. With Stella being a stray dog, right out the back door of an Animal Control, we had no information of her history. The proper introductions were imperative.
